Valtteri Bottas is an interesting person. To me, he is one of the most-underrated formula one drivers on the grid. If you are new to formula one racing, you might wonder; when did Bottas leave Mercedes?
Bottas had been with Mercedes for five seasons.
It was a stint that had mixed results for Valtteri. He performed very well in some races and seasons, but also had disappointing results in others.
Some people have argued that he was a wingman to Lewis Hamilton. You might agree or disagree with that.
To me, Bottas is a brilliant driver. He just was not consistent with this race craft.
At a personal level, I do like Valtteri Bottas. He is calm, measured, unassuming and respectful.
He is also a great team player. This is a trait many business leaders would wish in all their teams.
Mercedes were grateful to have him, and he helped the team to win five constructors’ championship.
“Valtteri has done a fantastic job and he has made an essential contribution to our success and to our growth,” Wolff said. “He would absolutely have deserved to stay with the team, and I am pleased that he has been able to choose an exciting challenge with Alfa next year.”
When he was in good form, he could beat Hamilton to the pole position. In fact, at some point you were sure he would be on pole.
However, it is during the actual race where his consistency would fail him
So, when did Bottas leave Mercedes?
In this article, you will learn when Valtteri left team Mercedes, and the possible reasons that made him move to a different team.
When Did Bottas Leave Mercedes?
Bottas officially left Mercedes F1 team in December, 2021.
While his announcement to exit from Mercedes was announced in September, 2021, the Finn driver officially joined Alfa Romeo in December of the same year.
He was released by Mercedes to go and test for Alfa Romeo after the final race in Abu Dhabi.
Valtteri Bottas is on a multi-year contract with Alfa Romeo. It is something that excites Bottas as well;
“A new chapter in my racing career is opening,” Bottas said. “I am relishing the opportunity to help lead the team forward up the grid, especially with the new regulations in 2022 giving the team a chance to make a leap in performance.”
In conclusion, Valtteri Bottas time at Mercedes was clearly coming to an end.
From his interviews, you could feel his frustrations. Maybe Mercedes were also starting to look into their future.
Bottas left Mercedes for Alfa Romeo at the end of the 2021 season.
This was a sad ending to a career at Mercedes that truly never took off.
While he is a fast and brilliant driver, I would argue that keeping up with world champion proved a bit too much for Valtteri.
